The R.C. Dening Collection

wpe7E.jpg (2006 bytes)
Lepidoptera and Odonata collected by R.C. (Tim) Dening from all around the world throughout a lifetime of travel and natural history interest from 1930 to 2000. The collection, amounting to more than 70 cases, is now held in the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, in Scotland. It features a  large number of Zambian butterflies and moths.

Butterflies

Dasyophthalma rusina

There were 47 cases of butterflies in the R.C. Dening Collection containing specimens from 323 different genera. They were collected from 42 different countries around the world (map). The cases were organized according to taxonomic criteria rather than geographical origin.

Each case has a web page dedicated to it, displaying a roughly 800 x 600 pixel picture of each of the two case halves, together with the names of each of the specimens and their country of collection. You can also access higher resolution images of each case half by clicking on the lower resolution images on the page.

Most of the specimens were numbered. These numbers refer to personal notes kept by R.C. Dening. The numbers relate to species notes rather than individual specimen notes. You can access these personal collector's notes by clicking on each of the numbered names on individual case pages.

The notes were handwritten and are somewhat cryptic for someone unfamiliar with Tim's life, so explanatory notes have been provided (here) to help the reader to interpret the collector's notes.

You can view the butterfly collection in two ways. You can select individual cases to view from a gallery of small images. Alternatively, search for cases containing particular genera from an alphabetical list of genera in the collection
